30th April is the birth anniversary of the legendary filmmaker Dadasaheb Phalke and today is the 148th birthday of him. Today let us know about Dadasaheb Phalke. He is known as the father of Indian Cinema. His real name is Dhundiraj Govind Phalke but popularly he is known as Dadasaheb Phalke.
He was born on April 30, 1870, in Trimbak which is in Maharastra now. Phalke made the first silent film named ‘Raja Harishchandra’ in 1913 with special effects. The film was a big hit. ‘Raja Harishchandra’, is recognized as India’s first ever full-length feature film. His other memorable movies are ‘Mohini Bhasmasur’, ‘Satyavan Savitri’ and ‘Kaliya Mardan‘.
He made 95 movies and 27 short films in his career spanning 19 years, till 1937.

Google remembered the legendary filmmaker on his 148th birthday and made a doodle on him.
The doodle has been created by guest artist Aleesha Nandhra. Today’s Doodle shows a young Dadasaheb in action as he went about directing the first few gems in the history of Indian cinema.
In a blog post Google wrote,
Legendary Film Maker Dadasaheb Phalke
Phalke was deeply influenced by the works of painter Raja Ravi Varma. He resolved to bring Indian culture to the silver screen. He travelled to London to learn filmmaking from Cecil Hepworth, the post said.
The Government of India, in 1969, established the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. The award is considered as one of the most prestigious awards in Indian cinema. It is the highest official recognition for film personalities in India. The award is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony.

The actress Devika Rani received the first Dadasaheb Phalke award . Other noted personalities who received this award are Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, and Shyam Benegal. In 2018 the award was posthumously given to Vinod Khanna and Sridevi.
